Understanding Dental Exams & Cleanings: What They Are and Why They Matter
Think of this as your essential oral health reset. Dental exams and cleanings aren’t just about removing plaque or getting a tick on your to-do list, they’re a proactive way to prevent problems before they begin.
What Is a Dental Exam?
- Dr. Mahum Sarfraz
A dental exam is a complete health check for your teeth, gums, jaw, and mouth. We look for cavities, signs of gum disease, worn fillings, oral cancer indicators, and anything else that could affect your long-term health.
We may recommend low-radiation digital X-rays if you haven’t had them in a while or if we need a closer look at anything hidden from view. These images help us detect decay, infection, or damage before you can feel it, so you can act early and avoid bigger issues.
What Is a Dental Cleaning?

Cleanings (also called prophylaxis) remove plaque, tartar, and stains from your teeth, especially in spots your toothbrush can’t reach. Even with great home care, professional cleanings help:
- Prevent cavities and gum disease
- Freshen breath
- Brighten your smile
- Detect early signs of issues
We use a combination of gentle hand scaling, ultrasonic tools, and polishing to make your teeth feel smooth, fresh, and healthy.
Who Needs Regular Checkups?
Everyone. Dental exams and cleans are recommended every 6 months, but more frequent visits may be suggested if you have a history of gum disease, frequent decay, or wear orthodontics or implants.

If you’re pregnant, diabetic, or undergoing medical treatments that impact your immune system, we may also recommend tailored schedules to support your overall health.
Are Dental Exams and Cleans Covered?
If you have private health insurance, most policies include two check-ups and cleans per year. And if you have kids aged 2–17, they may qualify for bulk-billed checkups under Medicare’s Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS).
Not sure what you’re covered for? Just send us a photo of your card, we’ll check it for you.
